Security & Risks » Enhanced Security Features

The protection of one’s personal information is the type of thing that every online trader needs to be able to take for granted. At optionsXpress, we consider it to be among our most important responsibilities.

We continuously strive to enhance our security precautions to help further protect your account and personal information.

Firewalls and Secure Socket Layering (SSL) Technology

When you submit sensitive information via the website, your information is encrypted online (look for the padlock icon on your browser to verify security). We invest in leading security technology and have developed procedural safeguards to ensure that our processes meet or exceed industry standards. We protect your information by receiving and sending it on the secured portion of our website. We use firewalls and Secure Socket Layering (SSL) technology among other methods to prevent unauthorized access to your account information.

Online Username and Password

Your username and password are unique. It is your responsibility to keep your password secure. If you distribute your password to third-parties, you assume responsibility for their actions. We recommend that you never share your password and that it be changed frequently—at least once a month. Secure password changes may be made online at anytime.

PIN Verification

To help prevent unauthorized cash transactions, optionsXpress requires all account holders to set a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for all online fund transfer requests. It is your responsibility to keep your PIN secure. If you distribute your PIN to third-parties, you assume responsibility for their actions. We recommend that you never share your PIN.

Forgotten Passwords

If you’ve forgotten your password, you can now update it on our website after you’ve provided certain key pieces of information to confirm your identity. To help protect the security of your account, we will no longer provide or confirm your password. As always, no one from optionsXpress will ever call you and ask you to verify your password over the phone, nor will our Customer Service representatives be able to provide you with your password.

Failed Log In Attempts

To help protect your account, we now block access to your account after a set number of unsuccessful login attempts. To restore access to your account you must contact Customer Service. Once we have determined that no fraudulent activity has occurred, your access will be restored. Although this may be inconvenient for some, this is one of the best ways to protect your account from unauthorized users.

Customized Automatic Timeouts

Set your automated account logoff to a reasonable time, to help ensure that you never leave your personal information untended. Timeouts may be set from as little as 15 minutes to as great as 180.
